Linguistic Systematicity and Universality/Diversity

The characteristic systematicity of human language can be observed at every level of its organization, from words through sentences to connected discourse, both in its formal and semantic aspects. What kind of systematicity prevails at each level, and how these different kinds of systematicity relate to each other constitute the most fundamental questions in linguistic research, and contrastive linguistic approaches often prove effective and revealing in analyzing specific languages.

Complementing this line of research are studies on the nature of language universals and the range of possible diversity found in human language, as well as those on diachronic change and synchronic variation. These make essential contributions to the whole enterprise of defining human language by elucidating the dynamic capacity for adaptation through interaction with various factors which lies beneath its static, internal systematicity.
