Research areas: Ancient Japanese literature (oral poetry or kayo and written poetry or waka); the formation of "classical literature" in modern Japan. The aim of my research is to reformulate the established mode of appreciation of classical Japanese literature by critically evaluating the received paradigm of modern Japanese literary studies. My current research concerns Saito Mokichi's reading of A Collection of a Myriad Leaves.
